The following are not craft or sewing books, but books that tell a story that includes sewing. If you are ready to inspire a young person in your life to sew, start by building a library of sewing stories. These stories are meant to be read aloud together for the very young, to beginner reader, to young reader, to young adult.

Corduroy is the classic story of a teddy bear in search of his missing button. He is ultimately taken home with a girl who loves him and repairs him. This can be a child’s introduction to sustainable sewing. For ages 2-5.

The Tailor of Gloucester is one of the classic books by Beatrix Potter. The pictures alone in this book is worth the glance. The story is of a tailor who is trying to meet a deadline. The mice come to his rescue. This is perfect to introduce the world of sewing and magic. Although aimed at ages 3-7, all ages can enjoy this book.
The Flying Sewing Machine by Nancy Zieman is a story that takes kids on a magic trip to Sewland where everyone sews. Although it is listed for 5-8 year olds, consider reading to your babies & toddlers. They will begin to feel magic in sewing.
Sewing the Magic In is a story that can be read to your 5-10 year olds to begin to feel the power of sewing in this great historical story. The illustrations take you inside the world of sewing. Children who enjoy The Greatest Showman movie might enjoy this book.
Sewing Stories:Harriet Powers’ Journey From Slave to Artist has photos of actual quilts along with child friendly illustrations to weave in a story of history. 4-8 year olds.
7.Betsy Ross: Designer of Our Flagis another historical book taking a look at. Children learn how to make a 5 point star. Ages 8-12.
My Forever Dress is perfect if you are reading to your granddaughter. The story follows a dress that is made together then altered and re-altered to fit. Perfect for grandma and me time. Ages 3-7.
Discover Sewing (Discover Reading) is a Level 2 Reader book meant for the developing reader. Although the pictures are not “kid friendly” the words will begin to teach about sewing while learning to read.
The Sew Zoey Collection is a collection of the first 4 books of the Zoey series: Ready to Wear, On Pins and Needles, Lights, Camera, Fashion!, and Stitches and Stones. Children will learn about creativity and self-expression while becoming interested in learning how to sew. Sewing terms are woven into the story for better understanding. Tip: Have a sewing project ready to go after reading. For 8-12 year olds.
The Forgotten Seamstress is a riveting story of a quilt and the search for the mystery of who made it and what the story behind it was. The characters across time and place are beautifully and clearly portrayed. The end of the story wants you longing for more.

The Sewing Machine follows the story of a sewing machine through several generations. This shows the contrasts in life in 1911 to 1950s to present day. The contrast is shown in the disposability of current day to the frugal mentality of old. The premise alone will make you want to get one sewing machine to have forever.
