Day 11. See other 31 Dayers at The Nesting Place.
Last week I gave you instructions to make the headpiece for a fairy or princess costume. Now I will give you directions on making a tulle tutu.
6 yards 54” wide tulle*
2 yards 1” wide grossgrain ribbon (for waistband)
Thread to match tulle
* VARIATION Let your little one be the designer. Length: How long do you want your tutu? Do you want a mini ballerina tutu or an ankle-length princess tutu? Measure from waist to desired length. Multiple this number by 12 to get the number of inches you need. Divide this by 36 to get the number of yards you need. Example: If desired length is 18 inches: 18 X 12 = 216 inches. 216 ÷ 36 = 6 yards. Color: Do you want all one color or do you like the look of 2 colors over each other? Example: If you like the way pink looks over lavender, buy 3 yards of each.
Cut the tulle into 6 equal length pieces. (For example cut into 6- one yard lengths for 18″ tutu.) Open out tulle. Put two layers on top of each other (one of each color if doing 2 colors.) Fold down crosswise (so there are 4 layers) and sew 1 and 1/4″ from fold to make a casing. Repeat two more times with remaining pieces.
Using a large safety pin, pin one end of ribbon. Feed through all 3 casings. Center middle panel with the center of the ribbon and sew through the casing and the ribbon so that it will not slip out. Gather the pieces onto the ribbon to fit. Separate the layers for a fuller effect. Tie with a bow in the back. Decorate with flowers if desired.
