It doesn’t matter that other teens and tweens are reading these magazines cover to cover. Your child is your child. You are the parent. You make the rules. You can say, “You can get this magazine if I go through it first and tear out anything I feel is inappropriate for you.” Of course they can read it from friends or the online issue. But if you start at a young age to establish ground rules, they learn to respect your decisions and trust that you love them. They will make good choices even when you are not with them.
I have seen so many parents give up after a certain age. They feel their teens are going to do whatever they are going to do. This is true, but there should be consequences. They still long for your guidance and care. Give them boundaries. Give them rules. Give them expectations. They will be better prepared to make the right decisions as they grow older.
We are raising the next generation. Do it boldly!
