Now that summer is upon us, it is time to think about how the children will spend their free time. If you are a working mom, you have been planning camps and care for months. For the moms that are home, you look forward to the down time without a hectic schedule. The lack of plan many times leads to boredom. Somehow we feel that we need to entertain our children so they don't get bored.
There is no reason why we need to be singing with the Staples comercial "It's the most wonderful time of the year" when its time for the children to go back to school. My saying has always been, "Through boredom comes creativitiy." (Not that my children like hearing me say that.) Left to their own devices, its amazing what they can come up with. I can remember playing for countless hours with a refrigerator box cut with windows and doors. With media and computer time these days, its even more important for tactile interaction.
Give children the space and tools necessary to create. Allow them to use sheets to cover furniture to make a fort. Allow them to cut up an old pair of jeans to make a purse. Keep costumes so they can dress up and write a skit. Let them get bored. Let them create.
