This houndstooth pumpkin is very simple to make.

Materials needed:
1/2 yard houndstooth fabric
Scrap of black fabric
thread
Buttonhole or strong thread
Polyester fiberfill

1. Iron entire piece of fabric and fold so that the right side is together. Stitch selvages together with a 4/8" seam. Iron seam open.

2. Thread needle with buttonhole thread or heavy thread. Make a knot at one end of thread. Beginning at seam make big basting stitches 4/8" from edge.

3. When you have gone all the way around, pull the knot from the beginning and use both ends of thread to gather fabric. When it is tight, knot the threads together in a square knot.

4. Using longer end of thread, wrap around fabric several times to tighten opening. Secure ends of thread by knotting again. Clip threads.

5. Turn pumpkin right side out. Stuff with polyester fiberfill. Begin by stuffing the walls then the inside.

6. Thread needle again with heavy thread. Knot one end and leave remaining end in spool. Do not cut thread!

7. Baste stitch around the top of pumpkin as you did for the bottom. Pull threads to gather. Adjust stuffing as necessary. Pull threads tightly. Pull knot out of the beginning of basting. Knot securely with a square knot.

8. Using spool end of thread, wrap thread around pumpkin twice to make a crease. Repeat 2 more times to make 6 sections as shown. The threads in the center top of the pumpkin will be scattered. Use spool to go under threads to draw them together at one point. Tie threads securely with existing threads from before. Clip threads leaving one long end from spool.

9. Cut 2 stems from a scrap of fabric from pattern here:

Stitch stem pieces together with a 1/4" seam on 3 edges as shown.

10. Turn stem right side out. Stuff with fiberfill. Finger-press 1/4" around stem edge.

11. Center stem open side down onto center top of pumpkin. Thread needle with long end of thread left on pumpkin. Hand stitch stem to pumpkin. Alternate stitches from crease of stem to gathers of pumpkin until you have stitched all the way around to stem. Knot and clip thread.
